The TK3 Face Mask has been specifically developed to protect players during penalty corner defence. Unlike other protective equipment, face masks for field players during penalty corners are currently not covered by the European standard EN 13546, leaving a gap in regulatory guidelines. To address this, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) supported a research initiative at Loughborough University, which now forms the basis of the current FIH recommendations for face protection.
FIH Performance Categories for Face Masks
Based on this research, the FIH has defined two performance categories for field hockey face masks:
Category 1
Masks tested under conditions where a hockey ball is fired at 128 km/h (80 mph). These masks meet all requirements for fit, facial coverage, mechanical strength, and impact protection. They are suitable for all levels of play, including elite competition.
Category 2
Masks tested at 96 km/h (60 mph) and meeting all essential protection criteria. These are intended for lower playing levels, such as junior hockey.
All masks labelled “FIH Recommended” have passed these demanding tests and are manufactured by companies that are members of the FIH Quality Programme. Category 1 masks are also approved for use at Category 2 level, offering protection across a wide range of ages and playing standards.
The TK3 Face Mask is certified to FIH Category 1.
